Overview
The Chinese Culture Festival is proud to present the debut of the Shangdang Bangzi Opera Theatre of Jincheng City in Hong Kong. Originating from the Taihang Mountains during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, Shangdang Bangzi is a nationally recognized intangible cultural heritage. Known for its intense, vigorous performance style and emotive music, it is renowned for its portrayals of historical epics like the Yang family generals.
Program Highlights
August 14: Banquet at the Three Passes
This production offers a distinct perspective on the Yang family lore, differing significantly from common versions like 'The Fourth Son Visits his Mother.' It centers on the righteous resolve of She Taijun, who confronts her son for his betrayal. Starring Plum Blossom Prize winner Chen Suqin alongside veterans Qi Suzhen and Zheng Fagen, this play is a masterclass in dramatic tension and traditional aesthetics.
August 15: Excerpt Showcase
- Killing the Wife (Wu Han Kills his Wife): A showcase of vocal prowess, depicting profound personal tragedy.
- Yanmen Pass (Assassinating the Zong, The Great Battle): A high-energy martial opera segment featuring impressive stunts, flips, and intense combat choreography.
- Wind and Rain at the Palace (Going Mad): A dramatic tour-de-force by Chen Suqin, portraying the mental breakdown of the character Jin Gui with visceral, emotional intensity.
