Overview
The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre presents "Modern Hero," a new production for the 2026-27 season. This play explores the journey of a "modern knight-errant" to question whether the spirit of chivalry still exists in today's materialistic, concrete urban jungle. The story begins with a sudden resignation, leading the protagonist to study martial arts at Shaolin for three years. Upon his return, he finds no villains to defeat, only the heavy pressure of everyday life. Through dark humor and nuanced storytelling, the play depicts his persistent resistance against ridicule and rejection, struggling to carve out a possibility of chivalry amidst the high walls of society.
Highlights
- A Contemporary Urban Fable: By placing traditional wuxia elements into a modern Hong Kong setting, the production creates a powerful contrast and dramatic tension.
- Blending Reality and Metaphor: The script employs absurd details—like using fries as throwing stars and cardboard as a bed—to portray how a "loser" becomes the hero of his own life.
- Acclaimed Creative Team: Written by Kwok Wing-hong and directed by Chan Shuk-yee, featuring an ensemble cast from the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre who deliver deeply moving performances.
