Highlights
To commemorate the fifth anniversary of M+, this exhibition showcases a significant collection of artifacts donated by the world-renowned architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron, the very designers behind the M+ building itself. This exhibition offers an intimate look into the architectural thought process and the evolution of their most iconic designs, providing visitors with a unique insight into how major urban spaces are conceived and constructed.
Program Overview
At the heart of this exhibition is the 'KABINETT' display system. Referencing the permanent storage room at Herzog & de Meuron's Basel headquarters, M+ has recreated these signature wooden cabinets to house the exhibit's collection of models, drawings, and material samples. This 'storage-like' open display format allows visitors to get up close to the architectural process, bridging the gap between abstract concept and physical reality.
The exhibition highlights the firm's extensive portfolio in China, featuring key projects such as M+ (2013–2020), Tai Kwun in Hong Kong (2006–2018), and the Beijing National Stadium (2002–2008). These works serve as a testament to the rapid economic growth and ambitious urban development in the region since the early 2000s. By showcasing both built and unbuilt projects, the exhibition explores how architecture responds to its surrounding landscape and contributes to the shaping of urban identity.
About Herzog & de Meuron
Founded in 1978 in Basel, Switzerland, Herzog & de Meuron are recognized as one of the most influential architectural practices of our time. Renowned for their experimental approach, material sensitivity, and profound understanding of urban context, they continuously challenge the boundaries of architectural form. As co-founder Jacques Herzog famously stated, 'Since architecture itself cannot be exhibited, we always have to look for substitutes.' This exhibition serves as a deliberate response, offering a rare glimpse into the creativity behind their pioneering designs.
