Overview

This exhibition presents a curated selection of works from the private collection of psychiatrist Dr. Ryutaro Takahashi. Commencing his collection in 1997, Dr. Takahashi has assembled what is arguably one of the most significant private collections of Japanese contemporary art. The exhibition captures the essence of artistic responses to the collapse of Japan’s economic bubble, featuring works that are deeply experimental and socially engaged. By placing these pieces in dialogue with M+’s permanent collection, the exhibition offers a profound reflection on the psychological costs and cultural transformations within contemporary society.

Highlights

  • Cross-Institutional Dialogue: The exhibition creates a unique space where Takahashi’s private holdings and M+’s museum collection converse, providing new perspectives on Japanese art history.
  • Thematic Depth: Explore complex narratives regarding the duality of violence and intimacy, the pressures of social structures, and the consequences of economic shifts.
  • Renowned Artists: Featuring the works of globally celebrated Japanese contemporary artists, with many pieces presented in Hong Kong for the very first time.

The exhibition features major contemporary Japanese artists, including:
