Exhibition Overview

The Hong Kong Palace Museum proudly presents the "Qing Imperial Manufacturing and Contemporary Design" exhibition, offering an in-depth exploration into the historical value and legacy of the Qing Dynasty’s Imperial Manufacturing Department, known as the "Zaobanchu." As the primary institution responsible for creating, repairing, and curating items for the imperial court, the Zaobanchu served as the cradle of Qing aesthetic craftsmanship. This exhibition features a carefully curated selection of nearly 200 precious artifacts, ranging from daily household items to elaborate court decorations, showcasing the extraordinary production standards and artistic aspirations of the era.

Highlights

More than just a historical survey, this exhibition acts as a dialogue between the past and the present. By analyzing the design logic behind Qing imperial artifacts, the curation team invites visitors to explore how these traditional crafts have influenced contemporary design thinking. Guests can examine these exquisite relics up close to understand how imperial artisans operated within strict institutional frameworks to produce enduring classics, and consider the new relevance of this heritage within the context of modern design.
