Highlights

"Dream · Fantasy · Splitting the Coffin (Rerun)" is a dramatically intense Cantonese opera production presented by Xi Li Qian Kun Co. Ltd. Based on the classic tale of "Zhuang Zhou Tests His Wife," this adaptation draws inspiration from Beijing Opera aesthetics. It focuses on the character of Tian, exploring the layers of "dreams" and "illusions" through the interactions between Zhuang Zhou, Chu Wangsun, the widow, and the butterflies. The production showcases the core Chinese opera elements of "singing, acting, recitation, and fighting" (Chang, Zuo, Nian, Da) on a minimalist stage.

Program Introduction

Following its 2024 premiere, this rerun synthesizes the three distinct endings previously presented, allowing the audience to experience the full spectrum of tragedy and comedy within Tian’s destiny. The story depicts Zhuang Zhou, who, after achieving enlightenment, tests his wife Tian by faking his own death and transforming into Chu Wangsun to court her. Confused and enticed, Tian finds herself in a dilemma of loyalty and desire. The climax arrives when she decides to split the coffin to save Wangsun’s life, only for Zhuang Zhou to leap out, confronting her with the reality of her choices. The performance lasts approximately 100 minutes without an intermission.
