Highlights
Serving as the grand finale of the season, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra (HK Phil) welcomes back the esteemed Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste to the podium. He will be joined by the 'one-of-a-kind pianist' Igor Levit, as hailed by The New Yorker. This concert promises to be a stunning conclusion to the season, offering a profound artistic journey that explores themes of life, death, and deep human aspiration.
Program
The concert repertoire features a compelling selection of works that delve into the composers' inner worlds:
- Saariaho: Variations on the Midnight Sun: Inspired by the bright summer nights of the Arctic and the birth of her first child, this piece serves as a luminous opening.
- Prokofiev: Piano Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 16: Igor Levit performs this technically demanding and deeply emotive concerto. Originally written as a memorial to a late friend, it is celebrated for its raw originality and intense emotional narrative.
- Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36: Conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste leads the orchestra through this powerful masterpiece, which depicts the composer's struggle with 'Fate,' tracing a path from internal turmoil to ultimate self-affirmation.
