Overview

The vocabulary of Chinese music is a long-standing treasure, continuously evolving through cultural exchange between the East and the West. This demonstration lecture, "Hearing Intangible Cultural Heritage," focuses on the Pipa, renowned as the "King of Chinese Plucked Instruments." Recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2008, the Pipa boasts a history spanning over a millennium. From its origins as a general term for various plucked instruments during the Qin and Han dynasties, to the "bent-neck" Pipa introduced via the Silk Road in the Eastern Jin period, and the preserved traditions of Nanyin Pipa, the instrument has undergone significant transformation. It was not until the Song Dynasty that the synthesis of these various forms established the basic structure of the modern Pipa.

Highlights

This program goes beyond a mere academic lecture; it is a living experience of musical history. Through works commissioned from Hong Kong composers, drawing inspiration from Dunhuang music and Nanyin Pipa, audiences are invited on a musical journey across the land and maritime Silk Roads. The lecture explores the historical evolution of Chinese plucked instruments, integrating modern modified instruments like the Zhongruan and the Sanxian—which carries the heritage of the Qin-Han string-drum (Xiantao). Together, these instruments weave a narrative that bridges tradition and contemporary soundscapes.
