Program Overview
Tai Kwun Contemporary is proud to present "Isaac Chong Wai: An Intimate Surrender" from July 10 to August 9, 2026, at JC Contemporary, 3/F. Curated by Ho Yuen-yu, this major solo exhibition by the Berlin-based Hong Kong artist draws inspiration from the classic film "Farewell My Concubine" to examine themes of "gender performativity" and "queer temporality." Through a blend of installation and live performance, Chong deconstructs the vulnerabilities and identity struggles faced by Asian men within established gender norms.
Highlights
- Cross-Disciplinary Narrative: Chong translates interpersonal tension, emotions, and memory into minimalist performance art. The exhibition integrates installation, sound design, and ongoing live performances, challenging the traditional linear narrative of art exhibitions.
- Reimagining "Farewell My Concubine": The work references Peking Opera movements and employs etched glass and mirror installations to reinterpret the fluidity of gender and traditional identity.
- Live Engagement: The artist will be in residence during the exhibition period, with ongoing performance interventions that allow the audience to experience the creative process up close and reflect on the boundaries between art and reality.
