Highlights

Presented by the Academy of Music at Hong Kong Baptist University, this concert features a fascinating sonic exploration of the piano. Renowned pianist Colleen Lee will demonstrate her artistic versatility by performing on two distinct instruments during a single event. The highlight is the historic Hong Kong debut of an 1849 Érard grand piano—an instrument famed for its historical significance and its connection to the legendary anecdotes surrounding Mendelssohn’s compositions. This performance offers a rare opportunity to experience 19th-century craftsmanship exactly as the composer intended.

Program

Under the baton of conductor Johnny M Poon, Collegium Musicum Hong Kong will open the evening with Mendelssohn’s sweeping 'The Hebrides' Overture. The program continues with Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No. 1, performed on the antique 1849 Érard grand, allowing the audience to hear the authentic charm of 19th-century industrial-era technology. In the second half, the performance shifts to a modern Steinway grand piano for Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4, providing a dramatic contrast in sound and technical evolution that highlights the breadth of the repertoire.
