Highlights
"Masterly Charm" is a specially curated concert by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, aiming to connect history, humanities, literature, and opera through the medium of Chinese orchestral music. Following its successful debut in Guangzhou, this concert brings these quintessential "Guofeng" (national style) masterpieces to Hong Kong, showcasing the brilliant works of four contemporary masters: Zhao Jiping, Wang Liping, Yan Huichang, and Jia Daqun. It is more than just a musical performance; it is a profound cultural dialogue that explores the innovative development of traditional Chinese music.
Program
This concert features a collection of iconic works that bridge tradition and modernity:
- Zhao Jiping: "Guofeng" – Based on the themes of the traditional qin composition "Three Variations on the Plum Blossom," this piece explores the resilience and spirit of the Chinese people through complex harmonies and variations.
- Wang Liping: "Dream of the Red Chamber" Cello Capriccio – Widely regarded as a 20th-century Chinese musical classic, this arrangement brings the beloved melodies to a new audience. Collaboratively arranged by cellist Trey Lee and Wong Hok-yeung, this piece offers a unique dialogue between East and West, reshaping the synergy between literature and music.
- Jia Daqun: "Capriccio - Pear Garden Bamboo Tune" – Using the flute to evoke the melodies of traditional opera, this piece portrays the emotions and stories of opera performers, while colorful harmonies depict the vibrant landscapes of the north and south.
- Yan Huichang: "Nu" – A Sanxian concerto inspired by ancient religious rituals, this work utilizes the raw, bold timbre of the sanxian to vividly illustrate the atmosphere of folk ceremonies, pushing the technical boundaries of the instrument.
