Overview

In 2027, marking the 110th anniversary of the birth of the legendary Cantonese opera playwright Tong Tik-sang and the 70th anniversary of the premiere of his masterpiece 'Floral Princess', the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra is proud to present a new Chinese oratorio, 'Floral Princess'. Composed by the renowned Chan Hing-yan with a libretto by classical literature scholar Professor Chan Wai-shun, this production is conducted by Artistic Director Yan Huichang. Stripping away the opulent costumes and traditional movements of Cantonese opera, this work adopts a minimalist oratorio format, accompanied by the full Chinese orchestra, to elevate this tragic romance into a modern musical ceremony.

Highlights

  • Artistic Synthesis: Combines historical records by Zhang Dai from the Ming and Qing dynasties with poetic tradition, providing a robust, epic layer to the timeless romance.
  • Oratorio Presentation: A distilled, minimalist performance style that invites the audience to focus on the power of the music and the poignancy of the story's historical weight.
  • Multiple Roles: Six vocalists will take on the performance, with some actors playing multiple roles to metaphorically portray the relentless cycle of history and change.
