"Classic & Rhythm" celebrates the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra's rich history of commissioning works that have withstood the test of time. As a highlight of the orchestra's 50th season, this concert pays tribute to past achievements while envisioning the future of Chinese music. Conducted by Sun Peng, featuring renowned pipa virtuoso Zhang Hongyan, this concert promises an evening of profound artistry and exceptional technical mastery.

Program

This concert traces the orchestra's journey from Hong Kong to the global stage, highlighting its commitment to the symphonization and internationalization of Chinese music. The program features a diverse selection of commissioned classics:

  • "Summer" (First Large-scale Commissioned Work of the HKCO) – Composed by Lo Leung-fai
  • "Coconut Grove Dance" – Composed by Ng Tai-kong
  • "Travels in Lhasa" – Composed by Kuan Nai-chung
  • "Farewell to the General" (Pipa and Orchestra) – Traditional (Notation by Shen Haochu, Edited by Lin Shicheng, Arranged by Kuan Nai-chung)
  • "Three Sketches of Western Yunnan" – Composed by Guo Wenjing

Performers

The concert is led by conductor Sun Peng, winner of the inaugural International Conducting Competition for Chinese Music. Joining him is distinguished pipa virtuoso Zhang Hongyan, whose artistic sensibility and virtuosity will breathe new life into these timeless compositions.
