In celebration of National Ecology Day on August 15, the Center for Civil Society and Governance at The University of Hong Kong is hosting a "Forest Village Eco-Cultural Guided Tour." This tour takes participants deep into the heart of Sha Tau Kok, exploring century-old Hakka villages: Mui Tsz Lam and Kat Tong. This is more than just a getaway from the city; it is a profound journey into rural revitalization and conservation, witnessing how these historic villages are reconnecting with nature and their cultural heritage.
Program
The tour begins at Lai Chi Wo, taking you along lush forest trails where you will encounter local natural heritage highlights like the 'King of Lychee' tree and historic wells, before arriving at Kat Tong. Participants will learn about local flora and fauna, gain insights into the history of the Hakka community in Sha Tau Kok, and witness real-world examples of rural revitalization. Don't miss the artistic murals created by village artists, which breathe new life into the old settlements. The tour on August 22 includes a special "Butterfly Tour" segment, allowing nature enthusiasts to wander through the butterfly garden and observe local species.
Venue & Access
Gathering point: Lai Chi Wo Nature Trail. Lai Chi Wo is situated in Sha Tau Kok and is accessible by ferry. Please note that the tour fee does not cover ferry costs from Ma Liu Shui or Sha Tau Kok; participants must arrange their own transport.
Ticketing & Notes
- Capacity: Limited to 15 people per group, on a first-come-first-served basis.
- Fee: Free of charge. A HK$50 deposit is required to confirm your spot. The deposit will be refunded in cash upon attendance. Deposits for no-shows are non-refundable.
- Eligibility: Open to the public; those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
- Recommendation: Wear comfortable hiking shoes, sun protection, and bring sufficient water.
- Weather Policy: In case of severe weather, organizers will notify participants by 4:00 PM the day before the event, with deposits refunded within two weeks.
