Highlights
As a masterpiece of contemporary Chinese theater, 'Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land' has captivated audiences for 40 years since its premiere in 1986. This 40th Anniversary Special Edition, directed by Stan Lai, is a landmark theatrical event. Praised by The New York Times as 'the most popular play in contemporary China,' this production masterfully blends the wisdom of ancient Greek tragedy and Japanese Noh theater. It juxtaposes the tragic and the absurd, offering audiences a profound reflection on the complexities of life.
Program
The play features a unique and absurd premise: two theater troupes—one performing 'Dark Love' and the other 'Peach Blossom Land'—accidentally book the same stage for rehearsals at the same time. Refusing to yield, they share the stage, resulting in a mesmerizing collision of genres.
- 'Dark Love' (An Lian): A modern tragedy detailing the star-crossed romance of Jiang Binliu and Yun Zhifan, who are separated by the turmoil of war and endure forty years of longing and distance.
- 'Peach Blossom Land' (Tao Hua Yuan): An ancient comedy inspired by Tao Yuanming's classic, recounting the hilarious and surreal journey of a fisherman who stumbles into an idyllic, utopian world.
As the rehearsal intensifies, the boundaries between the two plays blur, leading the audience through an emotional landscape of laughter and tears.
