Event Highlights
MAYAO Gallery is honored to present "Silence," the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong by artist Guan Weiwei. Curated by renowned art historian and curator Larys Frogier and Jules Chua, the exhibition showcases a new series of paintings and black ceramic sculptures. Utilizing a restrained palette of black, white, and grey, the works delve into the essence of imagery, challenging our perceptions of time and space.
Program Introduction
Believing that the contemporary world is overly saturated with color, Guan Weiwei prefers to create his works in the stillness of the night. His process aims to find a state of pure meditation through a monochromatic tonal range. By employing a unique technique that combines dyed black linen, paper, acrylic paints, and quartz sand, he imbues his works with a coarse, tactile quality reminiscent of sandpaper, contrasted by a disciplined sense of restraint.
Through the meticulous layering of pencils of varying hardness, Guan simplifies landscapes, domestic spaces, life forms at rest, architectural elements, and everyday objects. These reduced forms touch upon the silent yet profound resonances between images and memory. For Guan, silence is not synonymous with stillness; it is a vibrant, living entity.
