[Mei Ho House Family Fun Day 2026] Parent-Child Workshop III | 'Floral' Industry

Highlights

Part of the "Mei Ho House Family Fun Day 2026," this workshop offers families an immersive experience to revisit the grassroots lifestyle of 1950s Hong Kong. Through the historical context of "plastic flower making," participants will explore the "cottage industries" of the past and gain a deeper understanding of the collaborative effort and resilience that defined local families during that era.

Program

Presented by the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association with generous support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust, the event centers on the theme of "Returning to the Days of 'Appreciating Poverty'." During the workshop, facilitators will share stories about the prevalence of home-based manufacturing—such as beadwork, thread trimming, and weaving—where entire families contributed to household livelihoods. Participants will then bridge history and creativity by using modern pipe cleaners to craft floral bouquets, offering a hands-on perspective on the lifestyle of yesteryear.

Eligibility & Registration

• Target Audience: Children aged 6 or above and their parents or grandparents (applications must be made as a family unit: one child and one adult per group).
• Fees: Free of charge.

Venue & Access

The workshop will take place at the Multi-purpose Room of the YHA Mei Ho House Youth Hostel in Sham Shui Po. The venue itself, a historic building, stands as a testament to the development of public housing in Hong Kong and serves as a perfect cultural hub.
