Program Overview
The Hong Kong Repertory Theatre presents 'Modern Wuxia: To Turn/To Be', a striking contemporary work that bridges the gap between classic martial arts ideals and the realities of modern urban life. Written by Kwok Wing-hong and directed by Chan Suk-yee, the play follows a 53-year-old protagonist who makes a bold decision to quit his job and study martial arts in Songshan for three years. Returning to the concrete jungle of Hong Kong, he attempts to practice 'chivalry' in a city devoid of clear-cut villains, facing instead the crushing weight of reality. Using french fries as darts and cardboard as his bed, he fights to carve out a path of righteousness in a cynical world. This is a fairy tale for adults and an epic poem for the underdogs of modern society.
