Overview

Presented by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC), "Arts in the City: Revisit Tai Hang" continues the journey from the 2023 "Tai Hang Little City" initiative. This program invites citizens and tourists to once again explore the hidden gem of Tai Hang on Hong Kong Island. Famous for its intricate alleys, century-old fire dragon tradition, and blend of historical and modern architecture, Tai Hang offers a unique urban rhythm. This event transforms traditional community stories into art, encouraging the public to discover local creations and experience the genuine warmth of the neighborhood.

Art & Installations

Weaving artist Siu Yu continues her creative exploration from "Tai Hang Little City" with a new work titled "Form and Color Weaving." Displayed in an alternative kite form, the installation features the classic "Olive" (diamond-shaped) patterns of Hakka flower bands, bridging the historic memories of Tai Hang with contemporary community imagination.

Hands-on Workshops

Artists will host workshops focusing on Tai Hang's culture and community stories:

  • Tai Hang Scent Workshop: Artist Cheng Chi-kin guides participants in creating natural incense using tea grounds from local Cha Chaan Tengs and coffee grounds from boutique cafes, preserving the scents of the neighborhood.
  • Tai Hang Mythical Beast Paper Craft: The creative unit Hira Hira teaches participants to craft a guardian beast inspired by local Tai Hang folklore.
  • Mini Fire Dragon Craft Workshop: Artist Yiu Ming-shan combines traditional bamboo framing techniques with contemporary materials to create mini fire dragons, helping participants understand the century-old Fire Dragon Dance tradition.

Cultural Guided Tours

  • Architectural & Heritage Tour: Led by architectural scholar Dr. Lai Chun-wai, this tour examines Tai Hang's evolution from a Hakka village to a modern urban space, exploring how historic architecture fosters community vitality.
  • Cultural Heritage Tour: Hosted by veteran broadcaster Yip Wing-sze, this tour visits sites like Lin Fa Kung Temple, historic village houses, and local eateries, sharing stories of the community's centennial transformation and diverse ethnic narratives.
