Overview

"Mental. Behaviour. Capacity." is a thought-provoking multi-media exhibition by Hong Kong artist, writer, and disability rights advocate Sophie Cheung. Hosted at The Corner Shop in Tsim Sha Tsui, this exhibition invites audiences to engage in a profound dialogue about the intersections of law, mental status, and personal autonomy through the recontextualization of everyday objects.

Program

The core theme explores how legal systems evaluate mental states to deny individuals their legal capacity, often rendering them incapable of making autonomous decisions. Cheung transforms mundane items—such as painkillers, erasers, newspapers, branches, and ping pong paddles—into meaningful artistic vessels. By doing so, she challenges viewers to reflect on the weight of traces and memories, and the hidden stories behind everyday life that reveal the underlying societal structures.

About the Artist

Sophie Cheung is not only an artist but a dedicated advocate for the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). Her work is deeply rooted in her personal experiences and her commitment to social justice. Since winning runner-up at the Hong Kong Human Rights Art Prize in 2018, her works have been exhibited internationally, including at Art Basel Hong Kong, Asia NOW in Paris, and various exhibitions in London.

The exhibition is held at The Corner Shop on Hart Avenue, Tsim Sha Tsui. Admission is free. We invite the public to explore these installations and reconsider the connections between existence, autonomy, and our place in the world.
