An Exploration of Urban Soundscapes
The Friends of the Hong Kong Arts Festival (YAF) is proud to present the culmination of this year's Young Composer Workshop—a special concert titled Voices Hidden in the City (《聲隱城間》). This performance marks the triumphant conclusion of an intensive program where eight talented local university students have honed their craft under the guidance of renowned composer Dr. Fung Lam.
The Creative Journey
Throughout the 2025/26 workshop series, participants engaged in a rigorous curriculum including composition and notation training. The core of this year's project challenged these budding artists to explore the theme of "Hong Kong Urban Sounds" (香港城市聲音). Students were tasked with recording ambient sounds from around the city, integrating these urban textures into 5-8 minute original chamber music works.
This project not only nurtures technical proficiency but also encourages students to listen deeply to the city they call home. By collaborating with professional musicians—including Fung Yat-shan (Clarinet), Lui Lai-lai (Violin), Wong Sin-yi (Violin), and Wong Hiu-ching (Cello)—the young composers saw their visions come to life in a professional rehearsal setting, allowing them to refine their works through real-time feedback and collaboration.
