The 'Elite Cantonese Opera Emerging Talent Succession Scheme,' presented by the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong, stands as a cornerstone of Cantonese opera development in the city. Building upon years of success at the Yau Ma Tei Theatre, this revamped program showcases over 40 talented emerging actors. Under the mentorship of distinguished artists including Wang Chaoqun, Leung Siu-ming, Chan Wing-yee, Chan Hung-chun, Sun Kim-long, and Lung Koon-tin, these performers demonstrate their dedication to preserving and advancing this invaluable intangible cultural heritage.
Program
This phase features a curated selection of six Cantonese opera productions, highlighting diverse artistic themes:
- 'White Dragon Pass' (Bai Long Guan): A tale of loyalty and war, mentored by Chan Hung-chun.
- 'Sunny Skies over Peony Red' (Yan Yang Chang Zhao Mu Dan Hong): A touching story about a scholar and a talented woman, directed by Lung Koon-tin.
- 'Return of the Hero to the Phoenix' (Bai Zhan Rong Gui Ying Cai Feng): A comedy of errors featuring strong-willed characters, directed by Lung Koon-tin.
- 'The Sword and Whip Shatter the Begonia' (Yi Jian Shuang Bian Sui Hai Tang): A deep exploration of power struggles and love, directed by Wang Chaoqun.
- 'The Swallow Returns, The Person Doesn't' (Yan Gui Ren Wei Gui): An emotional portrayal of separation and longing, directed by Wang Chaoqun.
- 'Heroic Blood on Loquat Mountain' (Pi Pa Shan Shang Ying Xiong Xue): A gripping narrative of heroism and familial conflict, directed by Chan Wing-yee.
