Embark on an ethereal journey into the Locus Amoenus at the JC Contemporary in Tai Kwun. The exhibition, titled "Open the Box 2026: A Pleasant Place with Ryan Villamael," invites visitors to step into a meticulously crafted paper forest. As a renowned Filipino artist, Ryan Villamael has built his career around the delicate interplay of paper, history, and collective memory. This project serves as a cornerstone of his ongoing exploration of the "pleasant place"—a Latin concept denoting a sheltered, lush sanctuary.

The Immersive Experience

Visitors are encouraged to explore the floating paper canopy, which grows over time through the collective input of the public. This participatory project is not just an observation; it is a shared act of creation. Through the Collaborative Creation Slots, guests work alongside the artist to produce delicate vines, leaves, and abstract terrain, effectively weaving a story of migration and belonging. The exhibition runs from July 4th to August 2nd, 2026, located at the JC Contemporary, 1/F of Tai Kwun.

About the Artist

Ryan Villamael (born 1987, Philippines) is celebrated for his intricate paper sculptures. His work has graced prestigious institutions including the Palais de Tokyo and the Singapore Biennale. By utilizing traditional Filipino paper-cutting techniques, he investigates the tensions within historical narratives. Whether you are an art enthusiast or looking for a contemplative afternoon in the heart of Central, this exhibition provides a unique, meditative space.

We invite you to join our Collaborative Creation Slots. These sessions are the heart of the exhibition, allowing participants to physically contribute to the growing paper forest under the guidance of the artist. The sessions are held from July 4th to July 26th, 2026, and require registration via the Official Tai Kwun Website. Note that these workshops carry a participation fee of HKD 90, ensuring a high-quality, supported creative experience.
