Program Overview

Lu Xun's The True Story of Ah Q remains a landmark in Chinese literature, offering an incisive critique of national apathy and the psychology of 'spiritual victory.' More than a century later, the Hong Kong Arts Festival and Germany's Theater Vorpommern present a bold, new Cantonese theatrical adaptation. Directed by acclaimed Beijing-based director Tian Gebing and starring Hong Kong's versatile actors Ling Man-lung and Ng Siu-hin, this production reimagines the classic. It incorporates Christoph Hein's 1980s adaptation, infusing the narrative with contemporary absurdity and intellectual sharpness.

Highlights

  • Cross-Cultural Collaboration: Blending Chinese and German theatrical perspectives to explore how the 'Ah Q spirit' manifests in the challenges of the 21st century.
  • Star-Studded Cast: Featuring the visionary direction of Tian Gebing and standout performances by Ling Man-lung and Ng Siu-hin, supported by emerging local talents.
  • Thought-Provoking Themes: Through dark humor and compelling performances, the play examines the fundamental dilemmas of the human spirit in today's society.
