Xue Baochai, This Person

Program

Edward Lam, a prominent figure in Hong Kong theatre, brings his fifth creative exploration of 'Dream of the Red Chamber' to the stage with 'Xue Baochai, This Person.' Spanning four decades since his initial work 'The Stone Story' (1986), this production re-examines the character of Xue Baochai through a contemporary lens. Rather than a traditional adaptation, the play interrogates the complexity of her persona and her place in societal expectations. The production features nine original songs composed by George Chen, with lyrics by Edward Lam, weaving together a narrative that explores the dichotomies of perfection versus judgement, and the voids within human relationships.
