Highlights

The "Mei Ho House Parent-Child Experience Camp" is a special initiative under the Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant, designed specifically for families. The program provides a unique opportunity for parents and children to travel back in time to the 1950s and 1970s in Shek Kip Mei, experiencing the humble yet resilient spirit of the residents in the former resettlement areas through educational and engaging activities.

Program

The experience camp is divided into two distinct parts:

  1. Heritage of Mei Ho House Guided Tour: Led by professional docents, families will explore reconstructed residential settings of the era. Through the use of historical artifacts and oral histories, participants can gain a firsthand understanding of the strong neighborhood ties, mutual aid, and communal care that defined that generation.
  2. Interactive Parent-Child Activities: Based on the theme "The Spirit of Mei Ho House - We Grew Up in Shek Kip Mei," the session involves storytelling and hands-on crafts. These activities are designed to recreate the spirit of home-based cottage industries. Families will work together to understand how the previous generation utilized limited resources through division of labor, thereby cultivating values such as diligence, frugality, and sharing.

Who Should Attend

This program is ideal for children aged 5-8 and their parents or grandparents, making it an excellent cultural learning trip for a weekend family gathering, allowing the younger generation to connect with the historical context of Hong Kong's community life.
