Overview

The Isle Theatre proudly presents "Ruby," a new original Cantonese musical staged reading. The story centers on a transgender woman named Ruby, tracing her journey as she arrives in a new city and finds her footing in a bar in Central, Hong Kong. Through her struggles, her rise to becoming the bar's star, and eventually taking over its management, Ruby builds her own sense of identity and constructs a "home" where she belongs.

This is a fully original production featuring twelve new songs composed specifically for the script. Unlike revised musicals, the music and narrative were developed in parallel, fully charting the protagonist's growth from prologue to finale. It is a return to storytelling-focused theatre, offering an intimate and emotionally rich experience for Hong Kong audiences.

Highlights

  • Fully Original Production: Both the script and all twelve songs are original, ensuring a unique artistic vision.
  • Deep Thematic Exploration: The narrative weaves together issues of gender, migration, legal status, family, and love, examining identity and belonging in modern society.
  • Dual Casting: Actors Yang Ziqing and Lau Lik-chi will interpret the role of Ruby, offering two distinct performances and styles. We highly recommend experiencing both casts.
  • Unique Venue: The intimate setting of the Fringe Club Milk Bar allows for a close-up theatrical experience.
