Program Overview
This special seminar features internationally acclaimed theatre scholar and founder of "Performance Studies," Richard Schechner, Professor Emeritus at the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, in a dedicated dialogue with Hong Kong-based artist and University of Toronto doctoral candidate Ng Siu-hei.
As artificial intelligence, stage technology, and digital media rapidly transform the landscape of performance, the global theatre community is facing new questions regarding the fundamental nature of live art. How do we redefine "presence," the body, and the essence of performance today? Does technology expand the capacity of the body or restructure its inner value? In this seminar, the speakers will bridge theory and practice to examine the enduring significance of body-based creation in contemporary theatre. They will explore the potential paths for performance art amidst rapid technological disruption, fostering an essential cross-border dialogue between local and international artistic communities.
