Overview

"Cross-Chord: Boundless Melodies" is Tai Kwun’s brand-new autumn outdoor music festival. Utilizing the historical Prison Yard and its granite walls as a backdrop, the festival gathers top musicians and artists from Hong Kong, Asia, and Europe. It aims to transcend boundaries and ignite new artistic imagination through cross-cultural collaboration, exploring themes of freedom, humanity, and spiritual strength.

Highlights

  • Immersive Experiences: Unique performances integrated with the site, from the Prison Yard to the Laundry Steps.
  • Cross-Cultural Dialogue: Fusing piano, flamenco dance, Chinese traditional instruments, and Western classical music.
  • Commissioned Premieres: New works by acclaimed composers will receive their world premieres during the festival.

Program

The festival features several major performances:

  • "Path to Liberation - Waiting Hall Closing Concert": Conducted by Sun Zi-cheng and featuring 2025 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition winner Haochen Zhang, featuring works by Beethoven, Messiaen, and Liao Zicheng.
  • "Between Continuity and Heritage": Curated by Haochen Zhang, featuring international virtuosos in a cross-cultural exploration of shofar, erhu, and piano.
  • "Flamenco Nocturne": Spanish dancer Leonor Leal and percussionist Antonio Moreno present a powerful flamenco dialogue.
  • "Resonance Through Time & Space" & "Under the Same Sky": Showcasing the results of a year-long exchange between KLASSIK underground (from the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig) and Hong Kong musicians, exploring the profound connection between Eastern and Western music.
