Overview
"Oh Haji: Becoming Flowers" marks the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong for artist Oh Haji, the winner of the "Audience Favourite" award at the 2024 ANTEPRIMA × CHAT Textile Art Prize. This retrospective exhibition explores her creative journey and how she utilizes textile techniques to weave narratives of diaspora, feminine resilience, and collective healing.
Artistic Approach
As a third-generation Zainichi Korean born and raised in Japan, Oh Haji's artistic path is rooted in the exploration of personal identity. She masterfully employs techniques such as weaving, embroidery, and dyeing to give physical form to unspoken personal stories. Her practice extends beyond the object itself, often involving participatory elements and workshops that encourage strangers to connect through the collaborative process of creation.
Exhibition Themes
The recurring imagery of flowers in Oh Haji's work serves as a metaphor for cultural identity and the inner strength required to flourish in diaspora. From honoring the memories of her mother and grandmother to paying tribute to the unsung women of history, her textile installations and community-led projects offer a profound look into the depth of human experience. Visitors are invited to discover the rich textures and healing power embedded within her art.
