Exhibition Overview
Contemporary by Angela Li is proud to present "Baby Changing Station," a solo exhibition by artist Lau Sze Man. This exhibition features the artist's latest series of paintings, which employ a unique visual language to examine the complex emotions surrounding the concept of "home" and belonging during a life journey characterized by frequent movement.
Highlights and Artistic Concept
The exhibition title, "Baby Changing Station," is inspired by the signage commonly found in public restrooms. For Lau, this phrase is rich with symbolic meaning, representing a temporary, functional space of transition in modern life. The artist attempts to bypass existing linguistic frameworks, using the discrepancies between found texts, imagination, and translation as a creative medium. Through layered lines and tactile, expressive brushwork, she seeks to capture states of being that defy verbal definition, much like an infant perceiving the world.
Key Works
Lau Sze Man's practice deeply reflects the contradictions and anxieties associated with displacement. In the piece "They Have Strong Ties," the artist incorporates rejection letters from visa applications as collage material. Through techniques such as smudging, transferring, and scratching, these cold, bureaucratic texts are rewritten into a poetic collage about identity and attachment. Another series, including "Idyllic" and "X Idyllic," utilizes shower curtains as canvases. These household items, often printed with flat, idealized landscapes, create a sense of unreal distance within the interior space. By navigating the tension between materiality and painterly gestures, Lau leaves ambiguous marks that define the state of "home," oscillating between the figurative and the abstract.
Visit Information
This exhibition is more than a visual record of movement; it is an exploration of the boundaries of language and visual fragments. The deliberate gap between the titles and the imagery serves to open lines of inquiry for the audience rather than offering a singular explanation. We warmly invite art lovers to visit and experience these delicate visual fragments captured in transit.
