Overview
The "Mei Ho House Parent-Child Experience Camp" is part of the "Hong Kong Jockey Club Community Project Grant: Mei Ho House Hong Kong Spirit Learning Programme," organized by the Hong Kong Youth Hostels Association. Designed specifically for children aged 5-8 and their parents, this immersive experience invites families to step back in time to the 1950s-70s to explore life in the Shek Kip Mei resettlement areas. Through guided tours and interactive workshops, participants will learn how the previous generation overcame adversity with diligence, mutual support, and perseverance, ultimately fostering familial bonds and a deeper understanding of the classic "Hong Kong Spirit."
Programme Highlights
The experience is divided into two main sections:
- Part 1: Heritage Guided Tour Led by a professional docent, families will explore the Mei Ho House Heritage Museum. By viewing simulated living quarters, precious artifacts, and recorded oral histories, participants will gain insight into the tight-knit community spirit and the neighborhood harmony of the era.
- Part 2: Parent-Child Interactive Workshop Through storytelling, hands-on cottage industry simulation, and the crafting of traditional children's games, parents and children will learn about the resourcefulness and cooperation required to thrive in past times. This section promotes the values of thriftiness, effort, and sharing, helping children appreciate the positive character traits of their forebears.
