This course is designed to explore the core concepts of contemporary art: objects, materiality, and mixed media. Using a "thinking through making" pedagogical approach, students will delve into the profound relationships between materials, forms, and concepts. This course is more than just a technical workshop; it is an opportunity to ignite creative inspiration and deepen understanding of contemporary art contexts, making it perfect for creators looking to develop their own unique artistic language.

Program

The six-session course will guide students through the world of creation:

• Session 1: Foundations and Conceptual Inspiration: Exploring the meaning of objects, the evolution from readymades to installation art, and how materials carry emotion and philosophy.

• Session 2: History and Experimental Techniques of Mixed Media: From Dadaism to modern times, practicing creation using discarded materials (such as paper, plastic, and metal).

• Session 3: Space and Interaction: Studying the dialogue of objects in space and working in groups to explore "genius loci" (spirit of place).

• Session 4: Objects in Community Art: Analyzing the application of objects in community intervention with both local Hong Kong and international case studies.

• Session 5 & 6: From Experimentation to Completion: Focusing on the creation of a mixed-media piece, concluding with peer reviews, instructor feedback, and a small internal exhibition.
