Highlights
This advanced course is designed for art enthusiasts and researchers who wish to deepen their understanding of contemporary artistic concepts. As contemporary art has increasingly blurred the lines between high art and everyday objects, the role of theory has become essential in validating artistic expression. This course helps participants build a solid conceptual foundation for art appreciation and critique.
Program
The late aesthetician Arthur Danto famously remarked that contemporary art has become 'smaller' while the theories supporting it have grown in significance. This five-session course provides a comprehensive exploration of influential 20th-century theories and their application in artistic creation and critique:
- Session 1: Marxism
- Session 2: Hermeneutics and Semiotics
- Session 3: Postmodernism
- Session 4: Feminism
- Session 5: Pluralism
Performers
The course is led by Dr. Leung Kwong-yiu, who will conduct sessions in Cantonese (supplemented with English). The course is pitched at an advanced level, suitable for learners aged 16 and above.
Venue & Access
The sessions take place at the 15th Floor of the Hong Kong Arts Centre. Attendees can easily reach the venue via the MTR Wan Chai Station.
