"Shan Shui Ink Rhyme: Exploration of Song and Ming Dynasty Landscape Painting" is a visual arts course designed for beginners, offering a deep dive into the rich history of traditional Chinese landscape painting. Hosted by the Hong Kong Arts Centre and guided by instructor Ho Wai-lam, the course explores the classic brushwork and compositional techniques of the Song and Ming Dynasties. Participants will enhance their artistic appreciation and skills through hands-on practice, including copying masterpieces and studying layering, texturing (Cun-fa), and coloring techniques.
Program
The course spans eight sessions, progressing through the essence of traditional Chinese painting:
- Sessions 1-4: Song Dynasty Landscape Painting Introduction to tools and the characteristics of Song paintings. Practice tree and rock techniques, followed by a two-part intensive study of copying Song masterpieces, focusing on outlines.
- Sessions 5-8: Ming Dynasty Landscape Painting Explore the evolution of Ming artistic styles, study Ming-specific brushwork and rendering, and copy Ming masterpieces with a focus on layout, color, and stylistic transitions from the Song to the Ming period.
