Reclaiming the Art of Letterpress
Welcome to the Gutenberg's Apprentice: Letterpress Printing Workshop 101, a unique creative experience hosted by Contemporary Print Studio in the heart of Hong Kong. In an era dominated by digital screens and instant results, this workshop invites you to slow down, get your hands inky, and master one of history's most transformative inventions: the letterpress.
What to Expect
This workshop is designed as a foundational "101" course, meaning no prior experience is required. Participants will be guided through the intricate process of typography and composition, learning how to handle metal or wood type, arrange characters in a composing stick, and prepare the press for printing. You will explore:
- The History of Print: A brief dive into the world of Johannes Gutenberg and why letterpress remains a vital artistic medium today.
- Tactile Typesetting: Choosing your fonts, understanding kerning and spacing, and the satisfying physical act of setting metal type.
- The Pressing Process: Learning to operate a platen press to transfer ink onto paper with the distinct, tactile deboss effect that defines true letterpress work.
Why Join?
Whether you are a design student, an artist, or simply a curious soul looking to spend an afternoon creatively, this workshop offers a rare glimpse into the mechanics of traditional print. By the end of the session, you will walk away with a deeper appreciation for the craft and a customised print piece you have created yourself.
Venue: PMQ
We are proud to host this session at PMQ, the iconic creative hub in Central. This historic site, formerly the Police Married Quarters, provides the perfect backdrop for exploring heritage crafts. The atmosphere at Contemporary Print Studio (PMQ) is dedicated to preserving these analog techniques in a modern context, bridging the gap between historical craftsmanship and contemporary design.
