Highlights
Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra Pipa Principal Zhang Ying uses her strings as a brush to paint a musical feast that transcends time and cultural boundaries. This concert is not merely a showcase of technical prowess, but a profound dialogue on history, emotion, and cross-cultural synthesis. The pipa, an instrument with a millennial heritage, will demonstrate its rich versatility in the hands of Zhang Ying, echoing the unique 'East meets West' spirit of Hong Kong.
Program
The history of the pipa is a living chronicle of cultural fusion. Originating in Persia and arriving in China via the Silk Road, it blends the characteristics of the Western Oud and the Chinese Ruan. Zhang Ying will guide the audience through history with the following repertoire:
- 'Spring and Autumn' (by Tang Jianping): Rooted in Confucian culture, depicting the vicissitudes of history.
- 'Mulan' (by Gu Guanren): Featuring intricate techniques such as 'lun-zhi' (finger rolling) and 'dian-sao' (sweeping), portraying the heroism of the legendary warrior.
- 'Late Autumn' (by Li Bochan): Utilizing harmonics and expressive vibrato to paint a serene, ink-wash painting-like autumn atmosphere.
- 'Latin American Rhapsody Pipa Concerto' (by Luk Wai-chun): A world premiere featuring a bold fusion of Latin American rhythms with the traditional pipa, revealing a wild and novel sound.
