Highlights
"Offline Memories: Archiving Hong Kong LGBTQ+ Printed Matter in the Pre-Internet Era" is a significant cultural exhibition dedicated to preserving the vibrant history of the Hong Kong LGBTQ+ community before the digital age. By curating nearly 1,000 items—including newsletters, independent zines, handwritten letters, AIDS awareness flyers, government consultation papers, and event ephemera—the exhibition provides a rare glimpse into the activism and daily lives of queer individuals from the early 1990s through the 2000s. These archives serve as both a record of the past and a dynamic tool for shaping future discourse.
Program
This exhibition features eight queer and transgender artists who have reimagined these historical documents through various contemporary mediums, including video art, computer games, mixed-media sculpture, installation, poetry, wax painting, and expanded photography. Instead of viewing these archives as static history, the artists explore how memories can be appropriated and reconfigured to inform modern queer futures, creating a cross-temporal dialogue.
Featured Artists
Artists participating in this exhibition include Johnny Au, Chan Ting, Dorothy Cheung, Anson Mak, Ellen Pau, Beatrice Wong, and a collaborative project by Eric Yip and Veegay.
