Overview
After a year of rigorous development, 'Why Theatre' presents its highly anticipated annual production, 'The Last Madman'. Inspired by Aldous Huxley’s century-old literary masterpiece 'Brave New World', this devised theatre work extracts the core themes of 'Amusing Ourselves to Death' and sensory indulgence, translating them into a modern theatrical context. Under the direction of Ng Hoi-mei, a talented ensemble uses expressive physical theatre to highlight the stark contrast between wild nature and the cold, technological dystopia of the 'World State', inviting the audience to reflect on the plight of humanity in an age of over-consumption and dependency.
Plot Synopsis
John, a young man raised in the Savage Reservation, travels to the technologically advanced 'World State' with Lenina, driven by a pure yearning for civilization. However, as his profound soul and love for Shakespearean poetry collide with a society that suppresses genuine emotion through drug-induced bliss and superficial hedonism, John finds himself an isolated outsider. It is not just a dystopian prophecy, but a deep exploration of identity and the dignity of the human spirit.
