Festival Overview
The third edition of the Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival 2026, titled "Space Enter Shift", returns to the M+ Museum in the West Kowloon Cultural District from May 29 to May 31, 2026. This year’s festival explores the concept of 'space'—from the intimacy of bedrooms to the vastness of the universe—through a three-day celebration of avant-garde moving image practices. Featuring a diverse range of screenings, performances, lectures, and workshops, the festival examines how artists respond to physical, psychological, and machine-generated environments in an era of global ecological crisis and digital transformation.
Programme Highlights
The festival curates a selection of works that push the boundaries of visual culture. Key programmes include:
- Roger Garcia: Hong Kong Modern: A retrospective on the pioneering experimental films produced by Roger Garcia’s Modern Films Production since the early 1980s.
- Nomadic Trajectories (2026): A co-commissioned project by M+ featuring photographer Lamia Maria Jradi and sound artist Wang Jiajia. This live cinema performance explores the human traces left behind in the movement across time and space.
- Works by International Visionaries: Showcasing films and performances by Takashi Ito, Daham Park, Lee-Gil-Ji-Di-La-Wa-Ni, Xu Bing, and Zheng Ma-Le, among others.
- Architectural Explorations: The 'No Mere Construct' programme shifts the focus from linear narratives to the architectural spaces that define our reality on screen.
