A Performance About Navigating the Rooms of Life
In the city of Hong Kong, where every square inch is accounted for and every path is predefined, what happens to the 'self'? "A Room Without Myself" (《沒有我的房間》) is a compelling semi-autobiographical solo performance conceptualized and performed by Lam Kiu Yan. Inspired by Hong Kong writer Lee Chi-leung’s novel A Room, the play functions as both a personal catharsis and a critique of the rigid societal structures that govern our lives.
The Narrative
This production delves into the experience of being a 'model student'—one who navigates the school system, conforms to religious expectations, and enters the workforce—only to find the internal structure crumbling beneath a polished exterior. Lam Kiu Yan uses the metaphor of a 'room' to represent different life stages and institutions, illustrating how these spaces, while promising growth and salvation, often prioritize conformity and 'stability' over individual humanity. As a black comedy, the play balances whimsical childhood memories with the harsher realities of mental health struggles, questioning how one can remain honest to oneself in a world that demands a performance of normality.
