Presented as a highlight of the Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival 2026: Space Enter Shift, "A Room of One's Own" offers a profound exploration of the domestic sphere. Far from being a neutral sanctuary, the home serves as the final frontier of autonomy before entering the monitored 'external' world. This curated programme gathers various moving image works that capture the complex realities within four walls, transforming personal conditions into radical landscapes of expression.

Programme Highlights

Through this selection, viewers are invited to traverse the domestic domain, where the infinite world takes shape—from a playground of dreams to a theatre of grief. Featured works include:

  • Takashi Ito’s Grimm (1985): A ghostly, flickering journey through a domestic space, spiralling into a 'tatami universe'.
  • 蒋志 (Jiang Zhi)’s Flying, Flying (1997): A gliding hand moves through a cramped Beijing apartment, depicting the artist’s struggle within a stark reality.
  • Han Ok-hee’s Three Mirrors (1975): A woman explores her body and presence within the private home, finding a freedom often denied in public.
  • Trinh T. Minh-ha’s Surname Viet Given Name Nam (1995): (Reference to A Room of One's Own screening context) – The programme also features works like Nalini Malani’s Still Life (1969) and Lam Yi-chi’s Horse Play (2023), which brings the collection to a poignant close with an unexpected 'intruder'.
