Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival 2026: Roger Garcia - Hong Kong Modern

As part of the prestigious Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival (AAGFF) 2026, M+ Cinema presents a special spotlight on acclaimed film producer, writer, and festival director Roger Garcia. Titled Hong Kong Modern, this screening session offers a rare look into the self-sufficient production model that Garcia pioneered in Hong Kong during the 1980s.

About the Programme

This 90-minute programme highlights Garcia's commitment to independent and essayistic filmmaking, showcasing his influence on expanding the boundaries of Hong Kong’s moving image culture beyond commercial cinema. Through works produced under his Modern Films Production and Neo Films Production banners, Garcia reflects on the liminal spaces between text and image, and the shifting identity of a city in constant transition.

Featured works include:

  • [City-New Map Part 1] (1981): A seminal work that established Garcia's 'DIY' production method. It weaves together dialogue, location footage, and evocative imagery to explore the deteriorating relationship between a Chinese musician and his British wife.
  • [HKNY] (1992): Inspired by Italo Calvino’s Invisible Cities, this film reflects on the creator's own oscillation between his birthplace, Hong Kong, and his home in New York.

Venue & Attendance

The screening will be held at M+ Cinema House 1 in the West Kowloon Cultural District. Following the screening, there will be an artist talk where Garcia will discuss his work, M+’s recent restoration projects, and his collaborative network of independent filmmakers.
