The Things We Love Most Destroy Us: A Journey into the Afterlife
Sai Ngai Ye Creations (細囈野創作) presents its latest theatrical production, The Things We Love Most Destroy Us (《摧毀我們的總是最深愛的事物》), a poignant and dark exploration of the afterlife, karma, and the indelible marks our deepest loves leave upon our souls. Directed by Chu Kai-hin and featuring an ensemble cast including Lee Hon-tin, Lee Mei-yee, Lam Ka-ting, and Fung Cheuk-him, this production challenges audiences to reflect on the nature of destiny and the choices we make across lifetimes.
Synopsis: Where Souls Linger
The story is set in a surreal underworld. Old dreams have faded, and new realities remain uncertain; the human world is filled with anxiety. In the underworld, the atmosphere is heavy with resentment. Souls whose negative energy exceeds the acceptable limit are isolated, waiting for judgment. The fate of these souls—whether they will resolve their ties to the past and be reincarnated or see their existence terminated—is in the hands of two guardians, Migu and Xiao Meng.
However, the established order is disrupted when a mysterious man appears. His presence triggers a forgotten memory deep within Migu, shattering the status quo and leading to a desperate, life-altering exchange. The Things We Love Most Destroy Us delves into the philosophy of "the cause in the past life is the fruit in this life" (前世因,今生果). Is our fate predetermined, or is it a matter of coincidence?
Production and Creative Vision
Under the direction of Chu Kai-hin and the scriptwriting of Lee Hon-tin, this production combines psychological tension with imaginative stage design. 趙婉妏 (Zhao Wan-wen) has crafted the set and costume designs, while 曾梓俊 (Tsang Tsz-chun) provides atmospheric lighting that enhances the underworld’s surreal aesthetic. The production is a collaborative effort, with 謝文俊 (Tse Man-chun) managing co-production and ticketing, and dirtywork overseeing the graphic design and promotional photography.
