A Convergence of Movement and Identity
Experience a provocative evening of contemporary dance featuring two distinct yet thematically linked works: Chan Wai-lok's The Golden and the Fortunate and Albert Garcia's The Bug Is on Fire: First Ignitions. Set within the historic, industrial atmosphere of 1a space at the Cattle Depot Artist Village, this double bill invites audiences to immerse themselves in a contemplative exploration of faith, migration, and the lingering traces of human existence.
Related Performances
1. The Golden and the Fortunate (作福)
The Golden and the Fortunate is a choreographic inquiry into the complex interplay between wealth, luck, and belief. Chan Wai-lok, a Hong Kong-born artist with a background in architecture and contemporary dance, reimagines traditional symbols of prosperity and fate. Through the use of incense, low-frequency vibrations, and deliberate physical tension, the piece transforms the performance space into a ritualistic environment. The work questions the "as-if" logic of modern faith—how we construct "belief maps" to navigate the uncertainty of the future. It is a satirical yet deeply earnest look at the desperate human desire to control our destiny through ritual.
2. The Bug Is on Fire: First Ignitions (蟲火)
In contrast, Albert Garcia's The Bug Is on Fire: First Ignitions shifts the focus toward the visibility of the marginalized. Drawing from field research across the Philippines, Macao, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, this piece traces the invisible labor and existence of migrants and undocumented communities. Using movement, light, and sound, Garcia creates a fragile ecosystem of survival. It serves as a testament to those who are often erased by the rapid transformations of our cities, inviting the audience to witness a quiet, persistent act of coexistence.
Venue: Cattle Depot Artist Village
This performance takes place at 1a space, an independent contemporary visual art organization located in the Cattle Depot Artist Village in To Kwa Wan. Once a slaughterhouse built in 1908, the site is now a heritage-rich space that serves as an incubator for experimental arts. Its industrial, raw aesthetic provides the perfect backdrop for these intimate and thought-provoking dance works.
