About the Exhibition
"Sunmoji" is a public art installation by artist Hiroko Ito (Chan Yin-tsan), currently on display at the outdoor space of Oil Street Art Space in North Point. More than just an installation, it serves as a dynamic community atlas, capturing and evolving with the everyday life and memories of the neighborhood.
Highlights
The concept stems from the idea of a circular ring, symbolizing community cohesion and connection. The work consists of twenty-four unique seating pieces of various shapes scattered across the outdoor space. These pieces serve as a place for visitors to rest and interact. They feature replaceable inserts displaying icons co-created by the artist and local residents and students. As sunlight filters through the trees, the changing light and shadows across the pieces tell evocative stories about the area.
Interactive Experience
The name "Sunmoji" combines "Sun" with "moji" (meaning character/symbol in Japanese), suggesting symbols under the sun. On special occasions, these individual pieces are assembled to form a ring, representing unity and serving as a platform for the public to participate in creative activities, allowing community bonds to extend indefinitely.
