Highlights
Presented by the Hong Kong Film Critics Society, 'Cinefan 2026: Literary Echoes in Cinema' is an in-depth exploration of the dialogue between literature and film. This year's program centers on the theme of 'cinematic metamorphosis,' focusing on how literary adaptations transcend original texts to create new visual narratives. The selection places a special emphasis on female-led perspectives, examining how cinema reinterprets complex social ethics and gender dynamics.
Program
This year's curation features a thought-provoking lineup that delves into the dimensions of literary adaptation:
- 'The Third Man' (1949): Selected by Ng Kwok-kwan, exploring the moral decay of the post-war world.
- 'Inherent Vice' (2014): Curated by Chen Chih-ting, this film uses an unreliable narrator to deconstruct dark humor.
- 'The Dream of the Red Chamber' (1977): Selected by Lau Yam, showcasing director Chiu Kang-chien’s radical reimagining of the classic female archetype.
- 'Little Women' (1994): Curated by Chan Kwong-lung, examining the struggles of growth through a critical lens.
- 'Anna Karenina' (2012): Recommended by Tsang Fan-yue, reflecting on the patriarchal class structure.
- 'Wings of Desire' (1987): Selected by Lau Wai-lam, exploring cross-border identity.
- 'Orlando: My Political Biography' (2023): Exploring the boundaries of gender and identity.
- Special Presentation: Celebrating the 10th anniversary of the late feminist filmmaker Chantal Akerman with a screening of 'The Captive' (2000), reclaiming female desire from the male gaze.
