Overview

In a groundbreaking collaboration, Boom Theatre and the Hong Kong Arts Centre present "Fairy Tale Empire," a new, long-running, family-friendly musical. Following the success of "Our Journal of Days" and "The Yuppie Fantasia," this production is written, directed, and produced by Artistic Director Desmond Chan. The McAulay Studio has been specially redesigned to host this project, marking it as Hong Kong's first resident long-running musical, with a planned two-year run that sets a new milestone for local stage productions.

Story Background

The narrative revolves around a video game created by industry tycoon Kingsley, titled "Fairy Tale Empire," which allows children to physically enter the game world. Tung Tung, who dreams of being a game designer, and a privileged bully named Ling Jai, both dive into the game. To protect her child, Tung Tung's mother breaks the rules by entering the game disguised as a "Swan." As they navigate levels based on classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales, they must choose between cooperation and conflict, eventually forming a deep bond. However, the game becomes perilous when their identities are discovered by Ling Jai and the hacker Badman, challenging them to stand up for their principles.

Highlights

"Fairy Tale Empire" is an immersive experience featuring 20 talented young actors from Boom Theatre Jr. who perform across various sessions. The production features 15 original songs, intricate stage design, and spectacular visual effects that bridge the gap between video game mechanics and classic fairytales. The musical explores themes of team spirit, digital ethics, and overcoming defeat, serving as a poignant reflection on modern parenting—encouraging families to move from discipline to mutual understanding and resilience.
