Event Overview
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Broadway Cinematheque, we are proud to present "Wandering Time: A Retrospective of Jim Jarmusch's Early Works." This special screening series invites audiences to revisit seven iconic early masterpieces by the American independent film auteur, Jim Jarmusch, on the big screen.
About the Director and Style
Before diving into the world of cinema, Jim Jarmusch studied literature at Columbia University with dreams of becoming a writer. A transformative period in Paris, where he spent days in the Cinémathèque Française, shifted his creative focus. Influenced by the downtown New York punk culture, he debuted with Permanent Vacation in 1980, creating a distinct cinematic language. Jarmusch is known for his interest in "transitional moments"—he prefers watching people wait for a taxi rather than showing the car ride itself. His films often feature marginalized wanderers, with narratives unfolding in the spaces between events, allowing the poetry of everyday life to emerge naturally.
Program Highlights
This retrospective showcases seven of his early works, offering a deep look into the roots of his unique style:
- Permanent Vacation (1980)
- Stranger Than Paradise (1984)
- Down by Law (1986)
- Mystery Train (1989)
- Night on Earth (1991)
- Dead Man (1995)
- Coffee and Cigarettes (2003) These films are essential viewing, serving as a testament to Jarmusch's unwavering independent creative spirit over the past four decades.
