Program Overview
Tai Kwun Contemporary is proud to host a solo exhibition by Isaac Chong Wai, an artist actively working between Berlin and Hong Kong. His practice consistently examines social dynamics, interpersonal interactions, and the politics of identity. This exhibition presents a series of new, site-specific commissioned performance works that deconstruct film language and performance media to delve deep into the complex theme of "gender performance."
Highlights
The exhibition draws inspiration from the 1993 classic film Farewell My Concubine. Chong Wai engages in a cross-temporal dialogue between the rehearsal environments and film-shooting scenarios, transforming the gallery space with large-scale installations. The exhibition features a variety of media, including metal structures, etched glass, mirrors, and textiles. Within these carefully crafted environments, dancers will perform choreography that blends cinematic narrative with traditional Peking opera movements, challenging the viewer's established perceptions of identity and the nature of performance.
Team
The exhibition is presented by Tai Kwun Contemporary and curated by Ho Yuen-yu.
